Caravan to Class raised over $28,000 for its Mora School project in Global Giving's “December Global Open Challenge”
Sausalito, CA - (January 1, 2012)
Caravan to Class participated in the Global Giving “December Global Open Challenge” and took first place among more then 250 participating small charitable organizations. GlobalGiving.org is the leading online charitable giving site. Barry Hoffner, the Executive Director of Caravan to Class said, “Our strategy was to increase our outreach through social media, and participating in the Global Giving challenge met that goal.” During the campaign, over 65% of donations to Caravan to Class were from new donors.
The more than $28,000 raised by Caravan to Class during the Global Giving campaign will go to fund Caravan to Class’ second school in the village of Mora, outside of Timbuktu. In addition, for winning Global Giving's Challenge, Caravan to Class will receive an additional $3,500 in bonus grants from Global Giving.
The Mora school will directly impact the dream of literacy for more than 70 children by building a new school building, hiring accredited teachers, and providing basic nutrition for students. The school should be built by March 2012.
Mali is one of the world’s most illiterate countries. This impoverished country is currently having very challenging times due to a severe drought and legacy problems of the fall of Libya, a neighboring country. “Caravan to Class’ schools in both the villages of Tedeini and Mora represent one of the few hopes of not just the children, but of entire villages,” says Hoffner.
